A day in the life of
20/02/2007 by Gudrun.
It was not exactly a typcal day, as I was able to “sleep in” until 7.30am, instead of my more usual waking time of 6.30am. So I was more rested than sometimes, when I first brushed my teeth and then did my video exercises. I need a bit of a wash after getting all hot like that! then I got dressed, and again the day was untypical, because D made us a lovely cooked breakfast, and there were 3 of us to eat it, as M has been with us more or less all the time since 21st December. So all I had to prepare was the grapefruits and the drinks. More usual was that afterwards D read me the day’s Bible bits from the “choice Gleanings” callendar, whilst I first did the washing up and then sat down to do some knitting, all whilst listenning carefully.
The 3 of us then loaded up the freelander with most of M’s things that he has had here all this time, and went out to Dobbies, where M wanted a “green plant” for his study. he chose one that was nearly 5 foot tall, and it was quite hard to get into the car, and I had to steady it all the way to Glasgow to M’s flat, where I carried it up the 61 steps, whilst D carried all the rest, as M is still not allowed to carry anything after the op which was the reason for his prolonged stay with us. D and M then re-areranged M’s bedroom with D doing the heavy stuff and M saying where things should go. I, meanwhile sat in front of M’s huge new TV and relaxed! When that bedroom was all sorted to M’s satisfaction, we all got back into the freelander and went to a Tesco Extra, which took much longer to get to than the tom tom said it should! We went to “lunch” there, but were sadly disappointed with the range, quality, and quantity of food available. nevertheless we tanked up, and then did M’s shopping to fill his fridge ready for him to return to his flat next week. That meant, of course, returning to the flat afterwards, and only then beginning the trip home. On the return trip we had a serious discussion about the upbringing of young children these days, and I have to admit I believe “things were better in my day”.
Once home it was time to prepare the evening meal, to which our other son, C, had been invited as well. We had only returned home well after 4pm, and C arrived spot on 6pm as always, so it was good that D did most of the vegetable preparation, whilst M showed me “on line” what IKEA could offer to make my rather cluttered and disjointed study into a haven of order.
The meal went really well, the chicken was made to look rather silly, and only the mashed potato had any left overs! Whilst “the men” were still chatting over their puddings, I decided I had better pnone Mother, who lives 5 miles away, and whom I had not visited today. She was MISERABLE… as usual. She was miserable today because she knows herself to be a burden to us. And she wanted me to deny this and tell her how much I love her and love running circles arround her. But she knows I will not lie. So I changed the subject. I have had so much practice at this sort of thing, that I am quite good at it! I then tackled the clearing up with a vengeance, and so got it done much faster than I might otherwise have done.
We finished the day with several bits of TV, all previously chosen and “taped” on the DVD hard drive. It had been a good day, all in all!

the possibility of snow
17/01/2007 by Gudrun.
Our weather has been really odd recently. Over the past few weeks we have had so much rain that the ground is totally waterlogged and all the rain that falls now just runs out of the fields onto the roads. At the same time it has been so stormy that every roofer and slater in the area is fully booked, and those householders with no stuctural damage to their properties are really lucky. And now we have been promised snow. As I look out of my study window, I see a coating of snow that is just like sprinled icing sugar, and it is rather beautiful. But if we get rain las we have done in the last weeks, and this turns to snow, then it will be a differnt matter altogether.I hope this does not happen! And i look forward to a week of sunshine on holiday next week!

preparing for a holiday
15/01/2007 by Gudrun.
Trying to think what we shall need on holiday is not easy. It is wet and windy outside, and so it is hard to imagine what I will want with me and arround me in, hopefully, nice warm sunshine. I feel I need this holiday, so must make sure that once we get there we will really be able to make the best of it. There is nothing worse than arriving with just thin garments, and finding the wind is biting, or forgetting the carger for the camera! I have a list of things I usually take, but at each holiday we go to I always think I should have brought something different, and could have left a lot at home! So there is now a large pile of THINGS on my chest of drawers, ready to be sorted through once more and then packed in a few days time. Just looking at the pile makes me begin to look forward to being away in that sunshine!

Losing a friend
14/01/2007 by Gudrun.
Today we learned that Mary has won her battle to remain independant to death. She has struggled very hard and deserves her rest now. 6 months ago she had a single night in one of the most expensive nursing homes in Edinburgh, and was treated “like a sack of potatoes”, so she discharged herself the next morning. After that, despite her terrible disabilities (Parkinsons Disease) she managed to stay living in her sheltered flat with help three times a day to see to her personal needs. Another bout of a knee giving way took her to hospital on 23rd December, to her favourite ward, where we visited on 5th january. We found her less mobile than ever, but well hydrated, and sheerful and optimistic. Through all the years of her fight with this illness, Mary was always positive and cheerful. On that last Friday, she could no longer read as her eyes would not focus any more, and she could not hear the ward TV. For a lady who was used to reading The Times from cover to cover each day all her life, this was a terrible blow, but she only told us how well she was being treated, and how the rest in the hospital was doing her good. Two days later she collapsed, and was unconscious for nearly a week before dying peacefully. We saw her again during that week. Her grandchildren were there too, one little girl stroking her hair and another holding her hand. It was lovely. And now she is at peace.
